Michael Lowry, President and CEO, Lowry Solutions “I was delighted when Pinckney approached me about partnering for an internship program. But I had no desire to see kids stuffing envelopes or following people around. We wanted to be sure they were getting real-world experience by working on projects Lowry could put into productive use. Our partnership with Pinckney New Tech is far more than we imagined when it started. The students are bright and energetic, and our organization can learn just as much from them as they learn from us. Livingston County has some of the best and brightest right here in our community, and we should all be proud.”
Preparing the Next Generation for Technology Careers

Internship programs provide students with opportunities to experience the workplace beyond the classroom while helping them develop the practical skills that employers value. In industries driven by technology and innovation, hands-on learning allows students to better understand how technical knowledge is applied to solve real business challenges. Exposure to professional environments also builds confidence, encourages collaboration, and helps students make informed career decisions before entering the workforce.
For organizations operating in fields such as automatic identification, asset tracking, enterprise mobility, and IoT, investing in future talent strengthens both the company and the broader technology community. Students gain meaningful experience working alongside professionals, while organizations benefit from fresh ideas, new perspectives, and the opportunity to help shape the next generation of skilled professionals.
Bridging the Gap Between Education and Industry
Many technical careers require more than classroom instruction. Real-world projects introduce students to workplace expectations, project management, communication, and problem-solving in ways that traditional learning environments cannot fully replicate.
Internships help students develop practical skills such as:
- Professional communication.
- Team collaboration.
- Time management.
- Critical thinking.
- Technical problem-solving.
- Business process awareness.
- Project planning and execution.
These experiences allow students to better understand how different departments work together while demonstrating how technology supports day-to-day business operations.
Developing Skills for an Evolving Technology Landscape
Industries are increasingly adopting the latest technologies such as RFID, Barcode systems, IoT sensors, Enterprise mobility, Cloud platforms, and Automation solutions. With the march toward digital transformation, there is an increasing demand for professionals with technical acumen and good analytical skills.
The internship experience also exposes students to the technologies that facilitate modern business operations and helps them see how this technology advances efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making. Exposure to enterprise technology environments also better positions students to navigate change more quickly as emerging innovations come to market over the span of their careers.
Beyond technical learning, students acquire hands-on experience working with business systems, understanding operational workflows, and participating in collaborative projects with tangible deliverables.
Building Confidence Through Real-World Experience
Among the most significant advantages of an internship is the confidence gained from working on meaningful projects. It allows students to see how the business world works by learning directly in class how to solve real-world challenges, instead of simply observing from the sidelines.
Interns hone their technical skills with the guidance of seasoned professionals, while developing critical workplace skills like communication, accountability, and adaptability. Providing input along the way allows students to improve their performance for all of their placements but also experience what it is like to take on a role similar to those they will have in their careers.
This experience gives valuable insight into what workplace life is like, making it smoother and more successful in transitioning from education to full-time employment.
Strengthening Community Partnerships

These successful programs show how much good can come from collaboration between schools and businesses in an area. This can lead to better aligning learning opportunities with changing demand from the workforce when done in collaboration between schools and employers.
These partnerships form win-win scenarios for all parties involved:
- Students gain practical career experience.
- Schools strengthen career readiness programs.
- In part, you are helping clients build their future talent pipelines.
- Communities retain skilled professionals.
- A more skilled workforce means local industries benefit.
Long-lasting collaborations also foster continuous discussion between educators and employers to ensure students are learning the skills necessary for the current business landscape.
Investing in Future Innovation
Invest in the Future of Industries — Invest in student development organisations. By triggering curiosity, creativity and lifelong learning now, future professionals will be better prepared to tackle increasingly intricate business challenges.
As automation and IoT, RFID, enterprise mobility, and intelligent asset tracking technologies mature, or new technologies come on stream/by the time final execution happens, delivery partners with capabilities to design, implement & support new solutions will continue to be needed. The internships give students early access to these technologies, and it will help them become more proficient in technology, whichever career they choose.
Workplace Learning, when structured effectively with real-world work experience and the right mix of mentorship and training through collaborative learning experiences — can provide a lifetime return on investment not just for students, but their employers and the communities they serve. For one, when you support the development of technical and workplace skills in young professionals, companies receive a more skilled workforce that cultivates innovative solutions allowing technology to advance across industries.
